What is Mobile & Responsive Design?

Around the world, mobile commerce continues to grow as online merchants recognize the power that it brings to a comprehensive Commerce strategy. InternetRetailer.com published research by Forrester Research, Inc. that estimates by the year 2016, mobile purchases made on smartphones will total $31 billion dollars, up from $10 billion in 2012. Additional growth potential within mobile commerce may be possible as this estimate does not appear to take purchases made on tablet devices into account.

What is Responsive Design?

Responsive Design uses the same domain and same website content and is built in such a way to detect the visitor’s screen size and orientation and change the layout accordingly, including desktop monitors, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. A responsively designed website is flexible and “responsive” to the device it’s served.

Example: A non-responsive site could look fine on a computer but when viewing on a mobile device it can be difficult to read and use, often requiring the user to zoom.
