Mobile ecommerce is topping headlines these days as more and more consumers make purchases on their smartphones and tablet devices from anywhere they can get internet connectivity. Consumers are now making purchases historically reserved for their desk top or laptop computers while they commute home on the train, from the treadmill at the gym, in the doctor’s office waiting room and from the driver’s seat of the mini van while waiting for Junior to finish with soccer practice.
By 2015 there will be a total of 82.1 million tablet users (Source: Forrester Research Inc.) and Nielsen reports that 62% of mobile users in the 25-34 years of age bracket own smartphones and that nearly a third of mobile phone users have smartphones (Source: Nielsen).
So, how’s your mobile ecommerce strategy coming along?
You don’t have one?!?
If you aren’t convinced by the above statistics about mobile device penetration, maybe the hard dollars will change your mind. Here’s a chart from Internet Retailer that shows the groth of mobile commerce, or m-commerce, sales from 2010 through 2016.
While the 2010 and 2011 m-commerce totals might not convince you to get into the mobile commerce game, a look at the projections made by Forrester Research Inc. for the next five years should be very telling about the importance of mobile commerce in the future.
Establishing a clear and strategic mobile commerce plan now will allow you to not only secure additional sales via m-commerce now, but to ride the wave of increasing sales as the drive for m-commerce shopping increases.
