Okay, so no doubt you’ve heard of Craigslist. The “centralized network of online communities featuring free online classified advertisements with sections devoted to jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, gigs, resumes and discussion forums.” (Source: Wikipedia) You know, the online equivalent to a glorified garage sale? The one with the rudimentary self-posting capabilities and the clunky user interface that looks like it’s from 15 years ago? Yeah, that one.

Believe it or not, B2B ecommerce could follow Craigslist’s lead to improve the ecommerce experience. I know, I couldn’t believe it either, but it’s true.

I’m moving to a smaller place at the end of the week and have quite a few items that need new homes, so I thought that I would post them on Craigslist and see if they sell before I just load them into my car and take them to the local Goodwill. I went through the posting process and uploaded my images (because we all know that images help you sell stuff, whether it’s a giant airplane part or my faux wicker lawn furniture). After approving the post and checking on the “live” page that potential shoppers would see, I was simply STUNNED to see that Craigslist has taken a nod from ecommerce and upped their game a bit.

Here’s what I saw (this is not my listing):

Do you see it??

Alternate image views! In an intuitive and visually attractive interface! When you mouse over one of the thumbnails this is what happens:

HA! It actually shows you the alternate images, flawlessly!

The Take Away

Okay, so what does a platform upgrade on Craigslist have to do with B2B ecommerce? A lot. If the clunky Craigslist platform is getting an upgrade to make the shopping experience more user-friendly, it’s probably time to make sure that your B2B ecommerce site offers high quality images and an easy way to manuever from one image to the next.
